From the Front Porch

I am an "accidental blogger". When I launched my writing career in March of 2014, one of the things that I decided to include was my journaling, which I have always found to be a comforting and therapeutic endeavor.  It was a big risk to open myself up in such a public forum, but it has taught me that, for the most part, we share far more experiences than we think. It's comforting to know I'm not alone!  (*the "Button Text" is the link to my first novel)

The Tweedle Beedle Battle tongue twister from Fox in Socks rolled off my tongue almost faster than the students could even grasp the words. A gathered group of seven and eight-year-olds stood by me enthralled as I finished the section in 57 seconds, all 184 words! One young lady's eyes got wide as saucers. "Mrs. Schaefer," she said, "you have GOT to teach me how to do that!" I'm not sure the smile she put on my face is going to wear off anytime soon! I promised her she, too, could be as fast as I am. The secret? Read it a hundred times!

When my girls were small, this section of Fox in Socks was their absolute favorite and the part they loved the most was listening to me read as fast as I could. It never failed. At the end of each reading both of them would say, "Do it again, mommy!" Why is it that as adults we forget such luscious little joys? One of the best parts about being with students again is that they constantly remind me of the REAL secret in life...stay young, with all that entails. Continue to enjoy naps, cookies, a race in the grass, laughter at silly things, corny knock knock jokes, and tongue twisters! My tongue is numb from reading various parts of Fox in Socks all day, but my heart is happy and my soul is at peace. That lesson wasn't in the book, but I got the message loud and clear! So, what happens when Tweedle Beedles battle in a bottle with a paddle on a noodle-eating poodle? Everybody wins, of course!

    About The Author

I grew up in rural North Carolina. When I was only nineteen, I moved away and became a military wife. My only aspiration at that tender time in my life was to create an adult life that "fixed" all of the "injustices" of my childhood. Secretly, however, I wanted to reach for the sky! I wanted to be a writer and find ways to "save the world" (my mother used to say, "You have Save the World Syndrome".). Mostly, I wanted to matter.

Since then, I have learned to reach well beyond what I ever dared to think was possible. I've learned not to allow fear to stop me from whatever future I want to create!

What keeps me grounded? My Tribe! What provides the wind beneath my wings? A well of reserves filled with unstoppable passion!
