From the Front Porch

I am an "accidental blogger". When I launched my writing career in March of 2014, one of the things that I decided to include was my journaling, which I have always found to be a comforting and therapeutic endeavor.  It was a big risk to open myself up in such a public forum, but it has taught me that, for the most part, we share far more experiences than we think. It's comforting to know I'm not alone!  (*the "Button Text" is the link to my first novel)

I am a car dancer. Anytime I have to take a drive (especially a long one), I bring my iPod and crank up tunes that make me dance at the wheel (...my tune of choice on my way to register for classes today was "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons..played it four times between here and High Point). This has garnered some really strange looks over the years, but that's okay. I got over being self-conscious about getting my car boogie on a long time ago (...I see plenty of you belting out your own tunes and dancin' along from behind the wheel, so don't judge me!). One of my favorite things about rockin' out is that it helps keep me from getting grumpy at other drivers, because let's face it, driving can be wicked stressful! People don't pay attention, they drive too fast, too slow, allow themselves to become distracted (often on a cell phone) and put others sharing the road with them in danger! This drives me absolutely bonkers, so having a fun way to release the stress-pressure valve means I'll arrive at my destination in a good mood instead of being a snarly grouch.

Finding ways to decompress and make things that are generally unpleasant more tolerable is extremely important to me. Life comes with a laundry list of drudgery that is practically impossible to avoid (...like LAUNDRY). Whenever I am inclined to drag my butt at having to tackle these unpleasant tasks, or open my mouth to complain, I hear Aunt Mattie's voice in my head reminding me, "Your life is what you make it, and the world is how you take it." More often than not, this has me reaching for some tunes to change my attitude and create a much more pleasant experience. Turning the vacuum cleaner into my dance partner? Fun times! Singing in the bathtub? The duckies dig it! Wiggling at the wheel? Challenge accepted! What's on your playlist?

    About The Author

I grew up in rural North Carolina. When I was only nineteen, I moved away and became a military wife. My only aspiration at that tender time in my life was to create an adult life that "fixed" all of the "injustices" of my childhood. Secretly, however, I wanted to reach for the sky! I wanted to be a writer and find ways to "save the world" (my mother used to say, "You have Save the World Syndrome".). Mostly, I wanted to matter.

Since then, I have learned to reach well beyond what I ever dared to think was possible. I've learned not to allow fear to stop me from whatever future I want to create!

What keeps me grounded? My Tribe! What provides the wind beneath my wings? A well of reserves filled with unstoppable passion!
