From the Front Porch

I am an "accidental blogger". When I launched my writing career in March of 2014, one of the things that I decided to include was my journaling, which I have always found to be a comforting and therapeutic endeavor.  It was a big risk to open myself up in such a public forum, but it has taught me that, for the most part, we share far more experiences than we think. It's comforting to know I'm not alone!  (*the "Button Text" is the link to my first novel)

As I perused various Facebook New Year's messages this morning, I stumbled upon the video below. Tucked in between the genuine well wishes and the blah, blah, blah of noise was a scene so disturbing it jarred me to my bones. This was the stuff of my nightmares and my apocalyptic dreams, only these segments were real, happening around the world right NOW while I lounged in my bathrobe surrounded by my "safe bubble of oblivion." Honestly, I wanted to turn it off, look away and I was very close to clicking on the "x" at the top and ignoring it. I could go back to inane dribble, images of cute, fluffy animals, etc. and pretend like the content of the video wasn't my life, wasn't my world. I could have done that, and I wanted to but it would have been a lie.

I am not a Republican or Democrat. I am not a soldier or a militant. I am a passionate woman from smalltown America who has a strong sense of right and wrong and an even stronger desire to help create a world that is a better place. With my head still reeling from the video, I dug into various research on where I stand based on the multitude of issues it presents because I am not a racist. I am, in fact, a very much "live and let live" kind of girl. I'm not an extremist or prone to hysterical knee-jerk reactions when it comes to most things. I'm more of a "watch and learn, then decide" school of thought. And while I read more about various takes in regards to the word "Patriot", I discovered that I fit under this umbrella. I support the idea of officials in government elected BY the people, FOR the people, who are sworn to uphold and protect the Constitution (...which like it or not is still the highest law in our land and to my mind one of the greatest documents ever written). I support a government concerned with the welfare and betterment of its people, as well as the growth of the country as a whole. I support an America that stands for freedom, encourages ingenuity, and rewards hard-working, tax paying people. I support an America that believes in justice, has a moral backbone, and protects its people and way of life ferociously.

And as I step down from my soapbox, I just want to say that if the video below is the foreshadowing of the future, I won't have it! I will resist every single facet of it to my dying breath! What can one average woman from rural America do? I don't know, yet, but I fully intend to work it out!

I have named 2016 "Start Living Your Life Fearlessly" and I intend to embrace this wholeheartedly and with eyes wide open. It is my fervent hope that this year and the ones that follow will see a world that comes together instead of one that feels as if it's splintering apart.

    About The Author

I grew up in rural North Carolina. When I was only nineteen, I moved away and became a military wife. My only aspiration at that tender time in my life was to create an adult life that "fixed" all of the "injustices" of my childhood. Secretly, however, I wanted to reach for the sky! I wanted to be a writer and find ways to "save the world" (my mother used to say, "You have Save the World Syndrome".). Mostly, I wanted to matter.

Since then, I have learned to reach well beyond what I ever dared to think was possible. I've learned not to allow fear to stop me from whatever future I want to create!

What keeps me grounded? My Tribe! What provides the wind beneath my wings? A well of reserves filled with unstoppable passion!
