From the Front Porch

I am an "accidental blogger". When I launched my writing career in March of 2014, one of the things that I decided to include was my journaling, which I have always found to be a comforting and therapeutic endeavor.  It was a big risk to open myself up in such a public forum, but it has taught me that, for the most part, we share far more experiences than we think. From my earliest memories (and ability), I have been a writer, even when my writing was just for myself. It's in my blood. It's in my bones. I can't count the number of times words would get so backed up, cluttered up in my head that, had I not had a place for them to go, it would have driven me crazy. I made another discovery about myself in 2001 (my first year of teaching). I am also an educator, and will be for the rest of my life. Teaching sparks the same passion in me that writing does.

Kids matter to me, and it doesn't really matter to whom they belong, how old they are, or how well I know them. I believe the children of the world are our responsibility, our legacy, our hope, our magic, and our greatest resource. The subject of them is fast on my mind, especially with a new school year gearing up. I read posts from my former colleagues who are connected to education and smile at their collective groan of a summer that has slipped by too fast, but under this is a sense of excitement and possibilities, a hum of energy that a new school year always presents. In the last week, I've been to interviews at several schools, and I'm excited to see such diverse, committed, and like-minded people focused on giving kids, no matter their background, a chance to dream big and a ladder to reach those dreams that spread out above them sparkling like a sky full of stars.

As I reach towards one of my own high-in-the-sky dreams, I feel a kinship with students preparing to go back to school, my heart pounding in sync with them, full of eager anticipation. I am ardent in my quest to see what happens "next", to create something new, to stretch and develop muscles that have sat dormant. I am also enchanted at the discovery that there is a kind of marriage between being a teacher and being a student. They are interchangeable (or should be), connected, and intertwined with who I am. May we all continue to learn, and continue to teach...no classroom required.

    About The Author

    I grew up in rural North Carolina. When I was only nineteen, I moved away and became a military wife. My only aspiration at that tender time in my life was to create an adult life that "fixed" all of the "injustices" of my childhood. Secretly, however, I wanted to reach for the sky! I wanted to be a writer and find ways to "save the world" (my mother used to say, "You have Save the World Syndrome".). Mostly, I wanted to matter.

    Since then, I have learned to reach well beyond what I ever dared to think was possible. I've learned not to allow fear to stop me from whatever future I want to create!

    What keeps me grounded? My Tribe! What provides the wind beneath my wings? A well of reserves filled with unstoppable passion!
