From the Front Porch

I am an "accidental blogger". When I launched my writing career in March of 2014, one of the things that I decided to include was my journaling, which I have always found to be a comforting and therapeutic endeavor.  It was a big risk to open myself up in such a public forum, but it has taught me that, for the most part, we share far more experiences than we think. It's comforting to know I'm not alone!  (*the "Button Text" is the link to my first novel)

Day Five: Over the Moon

"For those determined to fly, having no wings is just a little detail." ~Princess Sassy Pants & Co.

How do you process being awake for one of the most amazing dreams of your life? I haven't figured out the answer to that question, yet, but when I do y'all will be the second to know. In March of this year I shoved everything out of my way that was keeping me from diving into my lifelong dream of being a writer. Truth be told, I was the biggest obstacle in the way, with a litany of excuses, albeit good ones (i.e. I am working full-time, I have children to support, we need groceries, etc.), for why I kept waiting to take this plunge. The beginning was the hardest part. I took a deep breath, hugged Mama Schaefer's words tightly against me and ripped off the band-aid. I began by creating an author's website with a section for non-fiction blog articles. My first entries shared a very private pain in an unbelievably public way. Once I did that, there was no turning back! All the while, I worked on editing and rewriting parts of a book I'd kept on hold for nearly a decade. I'm not even sure I can put into words what happened next. The best I can do is repeat my favorite metaphor for it; I'm learning how to FLY on wings built from love and words!

To date, I've published eight months worth of non-fiction articles, two books and I currently have three more books in the works that should be released by the end of this year! The degree to which this registers on my "Happy Meter" is off the charts, over the moon, and somewhere out beyond the Milky Way, and it's gaining momentum! I am fortunate enough to have a partner who can handle the financial burdens of living (I'd rather skip the starving part of being an artist), giving me the freedom to pursue this dream full-time. It's a little scary not having what people would refer to as a "steady job", but when that part threatens to royally freak me out, I force myself to get quiet and listen. On the ground I can hear all of the people who love and support me screaming, "Fly, baby, fly!"

    About The Author

I grew up in rural North Carolina. When I was only nineteen, I moved away and became a military wife. My only aspiration at that tender time in my life was to create an adult life that "fixed" all of the "injustices" of my childhood. Secretly, however, I wanted to reach for the sky! I wanted to be a writer and find ways to "save the world" (my mother used to say, "You have Save the World Syndrome".). Mostly, I wanted to matter.

Since then, I have learned to reach well beyond what I ever dared to think was possible. I've learned not to allow fear to stop me from whatever future I want to create!

What keeps me grounded? My Tribe! What provides the wind beneath my wings? A well of reserves filled with unstoppable passion!
